Reduce Construction Time
Advance planning and careful consideration of details can significantly reduce the time required for facility construction. An example can be taken from the prefab industry. Companies such as Pharmadule and Pharmaplan will construct a facility in modules and ship it to your site in less time than it takes to build a standard facility.

Why can they perform so quickly? Certainly a part of the time saved stems from the concurrent construction of the process areas while the site is being prepared. But substantial time is saved because there is just no time for changes. Fabrication of the process modules occurs so rapidly that changing one's mind is not an option. The additional time spent in engineering is usually recovered through shorter construction times.

This same benefit can be applied to standard construction but rarely is because of the tough discipline required. It is easier to proceed slowly and make decisions as one goes along. The consequence is longer time lines for completion. But it doesn't have to be this way. The challenge is to take the time to plan the activities that need to be performed, set a schedule and stick to it.

At times not all the desired information will be available when a decision needs to be made. However, in the long run it may be better to hold to the time line, make the best decision one can, and keep the project moving. In this way the project can be brought to completion in a shorter time.
